Cocodrie Tarpon Fishing

Tarpon Fishing in Cocodrie, LA

Welcome to Cocodrie, Louisiana – a hidden gem on the Gulf Coast and a tarpon angler's dream. Where the lush marshlands meet the vast Gulf, Cocodrie offers the ideal blend of structure, abundant prey, and perfect water conditions that draw these magnificent fish. At Camp Alibi, we've been attempting to catch tarpon here since 1986. Let's just say our extensive experience in not catching them makes us uniquely qualified to tell you what not to do. Consider us your guides to tarpon fishing in Cocodrie, with a healthy dose of humor and self-deprecation thrown in.

There's a thrill unlike any other when a 150-pound silver king explodes from the water, your hook firmly set in its mouth. These prehistoric giants, aptly named "The Silver King," present the ultimate fishing challenge. They're huge, they're acrobatic, and they have an almost supernatural talent for making three lawyers look utterly clueless. We've battled them, we've been humbled by them, and we've definitely lost more than we care to admit. But like any good glutton for punishment, we keep returning to Cocodrie, ready for another shot at tarpon glory (or, more likely, another hilarious fishing tale). This guide is a compilation of our experiences, observations, and hard-earned (and often painful) lessons. We'll share what we know (which isn't much), what we've seen (which is a lot), and what we've learned from the real experts (the charter captains we shamelessly follow). So, if you're ready for some honest (and often humorous) insights into Cocodrie tarpon fishing, you've come to the right place. Just don't expect us to guarantee you'll actually catch one.

What Makes Tarpon So Special?

Tarpon aren't just big fish; they're living relics, unchanged for over 100 million years. These silver giants, reaching up to eight feet long and weighing over 200 pounds, possess a combination of strength, speed, and aerial acrobatics that have humbled even the most seasoned anglers. We at Camp Alibi can certainly attest to that. Just ask us about the one that nearly pulled Steve overboard last summer. We're still finding pieces of his pride scattered across the Gulf.

Their armor-like scales shimmer like newly minted silver dollars in the sunlight, earning them the regal nickname "Silver King." When hooked, a tarpon often puts on a spectacular, heart-stopping display, leaping high into the air in defiance of gravity. Be warned: if you hook one, prepare for the fight of your life or a swift heartbreak. For us at Camp Alibi, it's usually the latter. This is generally followed by three grown men pretending they aren't completely crushed. These fish are truly something special.

Best Time & Season for Tarpon Fishing in Cocodrie

Want to maximize your chances of hooking (and inevitably losing) a tarpon in Cocodrie? Plan your trip between June and September. These warm summer months bring migratory tarpon to our waters in impressive numbers. July and August typically offer the peak action, when water temperatures hover in the mid-80s, and tarpon seem to be rolling everywhere – except, mysteriously, wherever we happen to be fishing.

Incoming tides during full and new moons often trigger the most aggressive feeding behavior. Early mornings and late afternoons provide prime opportunities, especially when there's a light chop on the water. Of course, after 30+ years of not catching them, we at Camp Alibi have developed a foolproof (for us, anyway) strategy to increase your odds: just do the exact opposite of whatever we suggest. Seriously, if we say it's a good time to go, maybe consider staying home. Our track record speaks for itself.

Techniques & Tackle for Catching Tarpon

Let's talk tarpon fishing techniques and tackle. While our success rate at Camp Alibi is, shall we say, less than stellar, we've observed enough and occasionally gotten lucky to offer some insights.

Live Bait vs. Artificial Lures: The Great Debate That We Usually Lose

Tarpon sometimes hit artificial lures, but live bait generally produces more consistent results. Freshly caught mullet, pogies menhaden, and large shrimp are local favorites. For artificials, large swimming plugs, bucktail jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits that mimic local baitfish can be effective. We recommend trying everything in your tackle box we certainly have. We've even tried rubber chickens don't ask.

Best Rods & Reels: Bring the Big Guns Seriously

Tarpon fishing demands heavy-duty gear built to withstand epic battles. We suggest 7-8 foot heavy action rods paired with large capacity reels 6000-8000 series spooled with 65-80 pound braided line. An 80-100 pound fluorocarbon shock leader is crucial to prevent break-offs during those incredible jumps. This setup might seem overkill until you experience the raw power of a tarpon. Trust us on this one we've learned the hard way what happens when you go light. It's not pretty.

Fighting & Landing a Tarpon: A Lesson in Humility For Us Anyway

The secret to landing a tarpon a feat we have limited experience with is maintaining constant pressure while letting the fish make its initial runs and jumps. Keep your rod tip up except when the fish jumps. Then, you "bow to the king" by lowering your rod tip. This reduces tension and helps prevent the hook from pulling free. This "bowing to the king" technique is something we've become quite proficient at mainly because our tarpon always jump right before they escape. It's a humbling experience to say the least.

Best Tarpon Fishing Spots in Cocodrie

Let's talk about where to find these magnificent fish. While we at Camp Alibi aren't exactly known for our secret fishing holes (the fish tend to vanish the moment we arrive), we have learned a thing or two from observing the more successful anglers in Cocodrie. Here are some prime tarpon fishing grounds to explore:

Offshore Rigs & Nearshore Waters: Where the Big Boys Roam

During the summer months, large schools of tarpon migrate along the Gulf Coast, often gathering around offshore oil platforms located 5-15 miles out of Cocodrie. These structures provide both shelter and a concentration of baitfish, which tarpon love. The deep water surrounding these rigs is prime tarpon habitat, especially in the early morning. We've heard tales of some truly massive tarpon being hooked in these areas.

Cocodrie Passes & Channels: Inshore Action

Closer to shore, the passes and channels connecting Cocodrie's intricate marsh system to the Gulf create natural funnels where tarpon gather to ambush their prey. Areas like Whiskey Pass, Wine Island Pass, and the channels around Last Island/Isle Derniere can be particularly productive. Keep an eye out for rolling fish or diving birds – these are telltale signs of bait schools, which often attract tarpon.

Conservation & Louisiana Tarpon Regulations: Keeping the Silver Kings Swimming

Tarpon are strictly catch-and-release in Louisiana waters. This works out perfectly for us at Camp Alibi, as we rarely manage to land them anyway. These magnificent fish are slow-growing and can live for many decades, making conservation crucial. We want future generations to experience the thrill of hooking (and, let's be honest, probably losing) a silver king.

When fighting a tarpon, it's vital to land it as quickly as possible to minimize stress on the fish. Always keep the tarpon in the water during release. Support its weight horizontally and revive it by gently moving it forward. This pushes fresh water over its gills until it swims away strongly. Take plenty of photos of your release. Trust us, no one will believe your tarpon tales otherwise – we know that feeling all too well. Proof is essential, especially when your stories involve fish the size of small boats.

Camp Alibi's Tarpon Encounters

Over the years, we at Camp Alibi have amassed a collection of tarpon stories that far outnumbers our actual tarpon catches. We've become experts in the art of the near-miss, the almost-landed, and the utterly baffling. Take, for example, the time we were absolutely certain we'd hooked the tarpon of a lifetime. After a grueling 45-minute battle, we discovered it was just a rather large jack crevalle. Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe it.

Or there was the memorable morning when all three of us hooked tarpon simultaneously. It was pure pandemonium. And, of course, all three fish broke off within seconds of each other. That one required a group therapy session (and several rounds of strong drinks).

Perhaps our most legendary (and heartbreaking) encounter involved Walter and a 150-pound behemoth. After an epic two-hour fight, Walter finally had the fish boat-side. Stephen, ever the documentarian, leaned over with the camera, ready to capture the glorious moment. Just as the shutter clicked, the tarpon made one last, desperate lunge. The result? A broken leader, a thoroughly soaked camera, and three grown men sitting in stunned silence for the entire ride back to the dock. We're pretty sure that tarpon is still laughing at us. These are the kinds of stories we specialize in at Camp Alibi.

What to Bring for a Tarpon Trip in Cocodrie: Be Prepared for Battle

Planning a tarpon fishing trip to Cocodrie? Smart move. These "Silver Kings" are an incredible challenge and a true test of an angler's skill (and patience). Whether you're a seasoned pro or a hopeful beginner (like us at Camp Alibi), packing the right gear and supplies is essential. Here's a comprehensive checklist to ensure you're ready for anything – from epic battles to inevitable heartbreaks.

Gear Checklist: The Tools of the Trade (and Tribulation)

  • Heavy-Duty Fishing Rod and Reel: Tarpon are powerful fighters. You'll need a rod and reel that can handle the strain.

  • 65-80 Pound Braided Line: Strong line is crucial to prevent break-offs. These fish are masters of escape.

  • 80-100 Pound Fluorocarbon Leader: A tough leader is essential to withstand the tarpon's sharp teeth and powerful runs.

  • Circle Hooks (7/0-9/0): Circle hooks are designed to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth, making for a safer release.

  • Large Landing Net or Lip Gaff: For controlling the fish at boatside (if you're lucky enough to get them there).

  • GoPro Camera: To document your triumph (rare) or, more likely, your heartbreak (frequent). You'll want proof for your fish stories.

Essential Supplies: Comfort and Protection

  • Plenty of Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The Louisiana sun is intense. Protect your skin!

  • Polarized Sunglasses: Essential for spotting fish and reducing glare.

  • Breathable Long-Sleeve Shirt: Keeps you cool and protected from the sun.

  • Wide-Brimmed Hat: More sun protection!

  • Cooler with Water and Snacks: Staying hydrated and fueled is important, especially during long battles (or long periods of waiting).

  • Sturdy Ego: Seriously, these fish are humbling. Be prepared to have your angling pride tested.

Bonus Item (Highly Recommended):

  • Tissues: Because there's nothing quite as emotionally devastating as watching a fish you've fought for two hours throw your hook with one majestic jump. Not that we're speaking from experience or anything... (Okay, maybe a little.)

Final Thoughts & Making Your Tarpon Dreams Come True

Whether you're an experienced angler or just someone who enjoys beautiful days on the water punctuated by moments of sheer adrenaline, tarpon fishing in Cocodrie offers an experience you won't soon forget. These magnificent fish have humbled us for decades, but the thrill of seeing one airborne keeps us coming back year after year.

Ready to try your luck with the Silver Kings of Cocodrie? We're happy to point you toward guides who can actually help you catch one. Just don't tell them you heard about them from us – our reputation on the water is questionable enough as it is.

Share your tarpon stories with us next time you're in Cocodrie. Whether they're tales of epic victories or spectacular defeats, there's nothing we enjoy more than comparing notes with fellow anglers. After all, the best fishing stories aren't always about the ones you caught – sometimes they're about the ones that got away. And boy, do we have a lot of those.

Remember: Camp Alibi specializes in extremely mediocre fishing followed by excellent cooking and card playing. For actual tarpon expertise, we'll happily connect you with real professionals who can put you on the fish. We'll probably be following them around anyway.
